Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal information Up Itchen Books collects through this website, why, and what you can do about it.

Who we are

Up Itchen Books is the trading name of TJ Orji, a sole trader based in England. Our postal address is 9-19 Rose Road, Southampton SO14 6TE, United Kingdom. We are the controller of the personal information described here. If you have a question about your data, email info@upitchenbooks.com.

When you sign up to our emails

We ask for your first name and email address. Some forms also ask whether you're a parent, a teacher or a reader, so we can send emails that suit you. We record which form you used, the page it was on, the wording you agreed to and when. If you came from a QR code or short link in one of our books, we note that code so we know which book brought you.

We use this to send the emails you asked for, such as news about new books or a free download. We only add you once you've clicked the link in our confirmation email. Our legal basis is your consent. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can use it at any time.

When you send us a message

The contact form asks for your name, email address, a topic and your message. We use them to reply to you. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering people who write to us. We keep messages for up to two years, then delete them.

When you visit the website

We count page views, clicks on shop buttons, QR code scans, downloads and the words people type into the site search, so we know which books and pages people find useful. We don't use cookies for this and we don't store your IP address. Instead, we turn your IP address and browser details into a scrambled code, mixed with a secret that changes every day. That lets us count each visitor once a day, and it can't be used to recognise you on a different day. We also note your country and whether you're on a phone, tablet or computer. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used.

We use your country to show you the right shops. Our website host, Vercel, keeps short-lived technical logs (including IP addresses) to run the site and protect it from attacks.

Our cookie policy lists the small amount of information the site stores in your browser.

Analytics and advertising, only if you agree

If you accept analytics or marketing cookies in the cookie banner, the site also loads Google Analytics, the Meta Pixel and the TikTok Pixel. These services set their own cookies and collect information about your visit, which they use under their own privacy policies. If you don't accept, they don't load. You can change your mind at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. Our legal basis for these is your consent.

Spam protection

Our forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to check that a person is filling them in. It looks at technical information about your browser and connection. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in keeping our forms free of spam.

Videos

Some blog posts include videos from YouTube or Vimeo. They don't load until you press play, so YouTube and Vimeo aren't contacted just by opening the post. Once you press play, the video comes from their servers and their privacy policies apply. YouTube videos use its privacy-enhanced mode.

Shops and affiliate links

Our buy buttons take you to shops such as Amazon. What happens there is covered by that shop's own privacy policy. Our links to Amazon may carry an Amazon Attribution tag. It tells Amazon that you came from our website or one of our emails, and Amazon then gives us totals of the books bought after such clicks. We never learn who bought what. Some of our links to Amazon.de are affiliate links: as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, and Amazon may set a cookie to record that you came from our site.

Who we share it with

We use these companies to run the site. They handle data for us under contracts and may only use it on our instructions.

  • Vercel, which hosts the website (USA, with servers in Europe)
  • Supabase, which holds our database (servers in London)
  • MailerLite, which sends our emails (Lithuania)
  • Resend, which delivers contact form messages to our inbox (USA)
  • Cloudflare, for spam protection on our forms (USA)
  • Google, Meta and TikTok, only if you accept analytics or marketing cookies

When data goes outside the UK, it is protected by UK adequacy regulations, the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contract clauses.

We never sell your personal information.

Children

Wonder Bourn books are for children and teens, but our sign-up forms are for adults and readers aged 13 or over. If you're under 13, please ask a parent or carer to sign up for you.

How long we keep it

  • Email sign-ups: until you unsubscribe. After that we keep only a note that you unsubscribed, so we don't email you again.
  • Contact messages: up to two years.
  • Visit statistics: these contain no personal information, so we keep them for as long as they're useful.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of your data, and ask us to correct it, delete it, limit how we use it or send it to you in a format you can take elsewhere. You can also object to us using it. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. To do any of these, email info@upitchenbooks.com. We'll reply within one month.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. If you live in the EU, you can also contact the data protection authority where you live.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we update the date at the bottom of this page.
